A Professor of Magic at Hogwarts -
Chapter 616: Historical Anecdotes - (2)
The impact of these words was profound.
At least, the members of the Stuart family, who had been lively and active as oppressed victims these days, finally calmed down. As Headmaster Zachariah stated, "The evergreen snake-wood tree will forever stand in front of Ilvermorny Castle, witnessing the friendship between the two magical schools..."
Uriah, due to his role in this event, successfully became a supervisor at the Magical Law Enforcement Office. Although his dream of 'changing the American wizarding environment' was still a distant goal, at least he was on the right track.
His first task was to represent the American Magical Congress as the companion of the Grand Sorcerer Felix Harp.
In the past, Uriah and even members of the Innovative Society could only raise questions, identify problems, and feel dissatisfaction and resentment towards the magical congress for being complacent in their ways. But now, their thoughts had shifted to how to solve these issues.
"It's tricky," Uriah sighed. "The closed nature of the magical environment and the strict laws in the United States have many practical reasons. The more I dig, the more headaches I get."
Felix adopted an attentive listening attitude.
"The restrictions imposed by the Magical Congress on wizards from non-magical families are due to fears of a repetition of the events involving Puritans and scourers."
This was another piece of dusty history. Felix nodded, simplifying it: the Puritans were extreme religious individuals who were Muggles and historically accused others of practicing witchcraft. Their attitude towards wizards was evident.
It's worth noting that when Isolt Sayre arrived in North America, the ship 'Mayflower' that she took carried many Puritans who were persecuted in Britain. They, in turn, persecuted others on the new continent. The scourers were wizards. Or, they used to be wizards. They were initially a group of wizard mercenaries from different countries, driven by profit, and willing to betray their own kind for a reward, like selling wizards to Puritans to be burned.
After the establishment of the Magical Congress in the United States, they began to purge and execute these traitorous wizards. Some escaped punishment, and they dared not reveal their magic again. Instead, they disguised themselves as Muggles, but this matter did not end with their deaths. These wizard traitors did not repent, but instead, passed on their hatred of the Magical Congress to the entire wizarding population of North America, generation after generation.
Several major and severe exposure events in the magical history of the United States were mostly related to the descendants of these scourers. The most far-reaching impact was shocking and terrifying to the entire wizarding world. The Magical Congress received a stern warning from the International Confederation of Wizards, leading to the infamous Rappaport's Law, forcing a strict separation between the magical and non-magical worlds to prevent such incidents from happening again.
"In this country, some Muggle families, although they have never seen magic, firmly believe that magic exists," Uriah sadly said. "They just think that all wizards should be eliminated."
Felix slowly said, "I heard Dumbledore mention that the people in America seem more difficult to be deceived and misled by magic than in other places."
"That's the reason," Uriah said affirmatively. "But there is much more to it. When you put all these things together, wizards in America face a terrible threat—"
"Muggle government," Felix solemnly said.
"Exactly," Uriah said, "Wizards are not a secret to the Muggle government, at least not for those at the top." He added, "Since the independence of the Muggle government, there have been several vicious conflicts between the two. The Muggle government wants to uncover the secrets of wizards or force wizards to serve them. But we staunchly resist; the Congress secretly destroyed some laboratories and erased memories... In short, there have been various open and secret struggles, almost approaching the edge of war..."
"I heard a saying," he lowered his voice, "In 1892, the then President of the Magical Congress and the President of the Muggle government secretly negotiated, establishing an agreement of non-interference that has lasted until today."
"Can I see this agreement?" Felix said eagerly.
"This matter cannot be found in formal historical records at all. I heard it from an old man in Congress. I can't judge whether it's true or not." Uriah shook his head and said, "I remember the textbooks saying that the reason for the fifth relocation of the Congress headquarters was the 'Great Foot-Giant Riot'... Anyway, since then, the Magical Congress has completely moved away from Muggle political center Washington, D.C., to New York, and has never moved again."
"Listening to you, it does sound strange."
Felix rubbed his chin. The Magical Congress has only been around for three hundred years, but it moved five times in the first two hundred years for various 'bizarre reasons,' while the British Ministry of Magic has never done such a thing.
"What happened in 1892?"
At that time, Dumbledore was only eleven years old, just starting school. He might not be familiar with this history. As far as Felix knows, Dumbledore did not travel outside the school after graduating. On the contrary, Grindelwald, for the sake of developing his 'career,' once stayed in the United States. Well, the old man was first caught here by Newt...
Felix and Dumbledore, neither of them told Grindelwald—In Classroom 7, the memory body of a certain magical creature enthusiast was lively all day—they both chose silence without coordination.
In mid-August, Felix left Ilvermorny.
Before parting, the head of Ilvermorny tried to keep him several times, hoping that he could give a few open classes for Ilvermorny students, but now it was summer vacation, so they had to arrange another time.
But this incident made Felix contemplate deeply. With the international exchange event, the influence of ancient magical texts had expanded to the entire wizarding world, but to make this subject more popular, one still had to rely on school education.
Beauxbatons had recruited seven or eight Hogwarts graduates this year alone.
Upon returning to the familiar campus, Felix hadn't caught his breath yet, and the Ancient Magical Texts Yearbook activity began. Many students—like Harry, who had just finished their trip—were surprised to find that many graduates from one or two years ago gathered again for this event.
These students were deeply marked by Felix Harp. They were the ones he taught. If you had to find a different group of people, it would be those in the Ancient Magical Texts Association. Harry had never thought that he would discuss the future of ancient magical texts with a group of old men and old ladies.
"Some of these people are old enough to be my great-grandfather," Ron quietly said to Harry.
But even if they found it strange, three days later, the 'Ancient Magical Texts Yearbook' with their names on it was published and distributed worldwide.
