Chapter 40: A Weird Professor
Chapter 40: A Weird Professor
After finishing up the broadcasting, Kieran got a call from an unknown number. What prompted him to pick it was because it belonged to a business.
He put the phone close up only to hear the voice of someone he hadn’t expected to call so soon. It was Mrs Jackson. She asked to meet for a discussion, and Kieran accepted — because why not?
He would have asked for that if she hadn’t, to begin with. Because he needed to let her on considering the real plan — to give her a choice, either to still remain in that company by working for him, or continue targeting the two girls.
Well, the second choice was definitely a no-go, because business comes first. Money and future comes before anything else.
Moments after the call ended, with Jaxon and his crew members leaving as well, Amanda suddenly appeared inside the room.
She breathed in deeply, and even Kieran turned in surprise with the frustrated frown on her face. Unknown to him, she just had the worst moment of her life in the course of remaining loyal to him.
Because, Robert Holland, that everyone who works for Kieran Holland address as the chairman, had asked Amanda,
"I heard you’re second to none when it comes to knowing about your boss’s activities. What transpired between him and Mrs Jackson who lost her company to him lately?"
Amanda had held her breath — replying this man words for words had even been a trial of bravery, the syllabus twisting in her mouth before she could force them out and her chest aching. He was just the person he was. But whatsoever, Amanda refused to tell him anything about that.
It seemed a foolish and risky decision she had made, one she didn’t even expect herself to, but still, he couldn’t betray her boss. Even if this man was the head of all, and his father.
Because, at this point, the father sees the son as a business tool. One he believed he had trained since birth, shown the cruelty and complexity of the world into a right fit for the bloody empire... And directly or indirectly so, they were rivals.
Amanda was sure her boss wasn’t even over any of what this man planned either. He just had to deal with the current problems first.
That was just it. And Amanda relayed everything back to Kieran in the ward.
Together with the most important gist of it — the Chairman wants to meet him. Though what Amanda did would definitely lead her to losing her job... But she assumed she had done her part well.
Kieran’s slippers brushed gently against the tiled floor as he stepped closer to Amanda’s side. He smiled as he said, "Thanks, Amanda."
She blinked, glancing at him, "W-well... It’s what I must do. Besides, I don’t get paid to spy on you."
Kieran’s smile was tight, and not long afterwards, he walked past her. "Contact Zyn for a new set of coats in the meantime. I will be stepping out to get some fresh air."
Why Zyn? Because she was now his personal fashion designer and had even designed most of his suits, like the clock-designed one.
Everything weighed in Kieran’s heart, walking alone through the passage then to corners after corners. He just sighed out loud, trying hard not to think about anything for now. Then, he took the long stairs instead of the elevator just to walk more.
He needed something to disconnect himself from all that was going on in his life. Something like struggle... If that’s all it required.
’The drama never ends...’
Just on the next floor he got to after descending the stairs, he heard a noise from around the small lounge. It was the voice of a lady, coming from the left side that Kieran soon paced towards.
Then he peeped inside, and shortly, he went inside the room because he just felt like having a seat like the quiet set of people there too.
Maybe the saying that minor things don’t matter is actually wrong, because when you’re trying hard to get something off your mind or just free yourself, everything seems desirable.
Kieran sat quietly inside, crossed his arms and laid his focus on the slender lady explaining something while standing on a podium ahead. She wore a pink shirt and black skirts, giving somehow the vibe of a professor. Anyways, Kieran listened.
He picked up some lines from what she was saying:
"... No one tries imagining what it would be like being in the other shoe. We all cater mostly for our own needs no matter how hard you try to convince yourself you aren’t self-centred. In short, no one in the world wants to put themselves in others shoes anymore.
And trust me, dearies, you can actually reason with even a murderer if you imagine being them..."
Kieran raised his brows with interest, squaring his shoulders. For some reason, it was like he was supposed to hear this.
But he had one question...
’Is this a psychology class?’ Kieran thought. ’This hospital is surely for the rich.’
A man from the listening audience with green hairs, asked, spreading his arms widely, "Do you now mean we should normalise criminal acts just for putting ourselves in others shoes?" He sounded quite argumentative for an old man.
The slender woman smiled slightly. "That’s a great one there, sir. But I am not asking to normalise it, but just what it would feel like if you were the other person. For instance, a man that wakes and sleeps on an empty stomach everyday, squeezing himself between cardboards to sleep on the roads, finally sees a shop nearby and took some foods to munch immediately.
Then the shop owners start to hit him for stealing when he was only trying to survive..."
"He could have asked for the food," a lady queried, her tone firm.
"... If you were him," the slender woman intoned, "would you have done so when you know they might end up ignoring you? My point here is no one is actually doing anything bad — if you also consider the shop owner who might be in a debt already, and gets his stock stolen, he’s right in hitting the thief as well. Due to hospital’s guidelines, I won’t be able to delve in better... But try thinking about this some other time. What it implies when no one is actually doing anything bad."
Kieran agreed she had to stop — she was starting to sound weird for real. Was she going to say next that killing someone wasn’t actually bad if the killer were hurt in the past too...? And also ended up killed by those who want justice?
Kieran sighed as he stepped out of the room. ’What a complicated and scary theory.’
But somehow, something sounded right about it. Yet, he didn’t want to think too much either.
"Why did I have to enter the room in the first place?" he mumbled, turning into a corner. "Had to come do some crazy morality test."
