Chapter 476: Chapter 470_1
After Zhao Yunxiang had recovered, she confessed her regrets to Lin Yue, expressing her fear that her health was declining and hoping that Lin Yue would look after Lin Genfa’s family and not allow her own affairs to cause a rift. Lin Yue had always thought Lin Genfa was of good character, estranged only because of Zhao Yunxiang’s actions. Now that Zhao Yunxiang was in such a state, Lin Yue had no reason to hold grudges, and readily agreed to help.
"Little sister-in-law, I thank you for putting aside past grievances. I’m afraid I won’t have much time left in this life. If there is another life, I would be an ox or a horse to repay you," Zhao Yunxiang said as tears fell. As the saying goes, a dying person’s words are kind, and Zhao Yunxiang was truly remorseful, but it was too late for her.
"Big sister, don’t talk like that. You and Erhu are siblings bound by blood, and the past is the past. Stop worrying about it and focus on recuperating. Dr. Zheng is Xin’an City’s best, and he will do everything he can to cure you. Don’t stress about anything else, I’m here for you." Whether Zhao Yunxiang truly regretted her actions or not, her health was clearly not promising. Lin Yue didn’t mind playing the good Samaritan at this moment. To her, everyone in the family was decent, except for Zhao Yunxiang and her younger son Lin Youjin. Even Lin Youjin, the once immature troublemaker, had become much more sensible after months of hardships without anyone indulging him due to his mother’s illness.
Lin Yue’s visit today was not just to see Zhao Yunxiang. When she had come over yesterday and seen how poor Lin Genfa’s family was living, she felt pity for the children. Now that Zhao Yunxiang’s life depended on medicine, a lack of nutrition would only worsen her condition. Since Lin Yue had already asked Dr. Zheng to try his best and had paid a hefty sum of silver, she naturally wouldn’t be stingy with such details; hence, she brought over a large amount of provisions like rice, oil, salt, and more, which filled more than half a cart.
"Lin Yue, you unfilial daughter, come out here! I’ve never seen anyone as heartless as you. I raised you for nothing. You come to Shanglin Village and don’t even enter your family home. How can you be so unfilial without fearing others poking your spine?"
Lin Yue was instructing Liu Aniu and Lin Genfa to unload the cart of grain and other items when a shrill and unpleasant voice reached her ears. Lin Yue was indifferent to the abuse; she had heard worse from Zhao Yunxiang and Zhao Lan in the past. It was clear from the voice and the content of the tirade that the foul-mouthed woman outside was her birth mother.
Not long after the voice faded, a woman around forty years old, with an aggressive demeanor, barged into Lin Genfa’s yard, followed by a man of roughly the same age who shared some resemblance with Lin Qing. Lin Yue almost immediately knew this man to be her birth father.
When Lin Zhou learned her daughter had been to Shanglin Village the previous day, she had rushed over to Lin Genfa’s place, but by the time she arrived, Lin Yue had already left in her carriage. Frustratedly, Lin Zhou cursed a few times, calling Lin Yue an ingrate for passing her parents’ house without entering, exhibiting neither guilt nor remorse. It was as though Lin Yue had actually been married off, rather than sold to Zhao Erhu.
Just now, someone came to report to her that her daughter Lin Yue had sent a large carriage of items to the Lin Genfa family. Mrs. Lin, together with Lin Fuan, hurried over, running all the way for fear of being too late. If Lin Yue gave away everything to the Lin Genfa family, she wouldn’t get a share. However, thanks to their years of hard work in the fields, their physical strength was good, and astonishingly, they didn’t even pant after running all the way here—their voices still thunderously loud when they cursed people.
Lin Yue had never held fond feelings for this pair of foster parents—after all, the original body that was regarded as ’defective goods’ had never lived a good day in her maternal family. Not to mention, she had later been heartlessly sold by her birth parents to Zhao Erhu when she was gravely ill, and not once did these foster parents come to see her. Such extreme indifference and heartlessness! As Erhu had said he signed a contract with Lin Fuan, from then on, everything about her, including birth, aging, sickness, death, wealth, and poverty, would have nothing to do with the Lin Family. Hence, seeing Lin Fuan and Mrs. Lin now, Lin Yue ignored them as if they were strangers.
"You ungrateful girl, now that you’ve grown bold, you act as if you can’t even see your own parents. I’ve raised you in vain all these years. If I had known you would become such a rebellious and unfilial thing, I should have drowned you in the chamber pot the moment you were born!" Mrs. Lin saw Lin Yue ignoring her and started to curse loudly. As she did, she noticed the carriage still had un unloaded goods, and she cried out even more fiercely, drawing over the surrounding villagers. Some had seen Lin Yue driving the carriage earlier and had already come over to watch the commotion. In a short time, Lin Genfa’s yard was packed with people.
"Oh, how have I suffered such misfortune, having a daughter who might as well be nonexistent. I’ve raised her with such difficulty, arranged a good marriage for her, and she had a chance for a better life. Who knew that after becoming wealthy, she’d forget her own family? She’s given everything to strangers while not giving a thought to her parents who raised her. I’ve never seen such unfilial behavior before, doing something so disgraceful that it shames one’s backbone..."
Mrs. Lin cursed and even shamelessly sat on the ground, pretending to be on the verge of life and death, which made the villagers laugh. Yet, very few people stepped forward to blame Lin Yue, for everyone knew the whole truth. They all despised Mrs. Lin’s character, knowing how Lin Fuan’s family had ’sold’ their daughter for silver and signed a contract to sever ties. They didn’t even visit their daughter when she was on the brink of death, and now they came pretending to care.
Of course, this was the sentiment of most people, but there was still a small fraction of old-fashioned individuals who disapproved of Lin Yue’s behavior. Even though they didn’t speak out, their looks towards Lin Yue clearly contained disapproval and blame. Filial piety is the most important of all virtues, and no matter what, these were still the parents who gave you life and raised you. Even if Lin Fuan and his wife were in the wrong, it was still not right to deny one’s own parents outright.
Lin Yue watched Mrs. Lin make a scene with cold eyes, and for a long while, she remained silent, as if she were watching a fuss that had nothing to do with her; her expression was serene and indifferent as if it didn’t affect her at all.
Lin Fuan was a man who cared about his face. Although he also wanted to take advantage of his daughter, he couldn’t make a spectacle of himself as Mrs. Lin did with her tantrums. So he just stood by, his frown deepening, his tobacco pipe puffing loudly, clearly showing that he was very dissatisfied with Lin Yue. Seeing that Lin Yue did not respond for a while, he finally couldn’t help but jump out.
