A Good Country Wife -
Chapter 408 - 402_1
Chapter 408: 402_1
"What are you blocking the way for, don’t other people need to pass?" Abao didn’t dare disturb his master’s enjoyment of the beauty, but others didn’t know their identities. Seeing them blocking the road without moving for half a day, some were getting impatient and said unhappily. It was a person with a loud voice at that, and their shout startled everyone, bringing Huangfu Jing back to his senses.
Not to mention Huangfu Jing, even Abao had never been treated with such nasty tone and language. Hearing the coarse man’s cursing and swearing, he immediately retorted, "What’s all the shouting for, are you deaf or what? With such a loud voice, if my master is startled, I won’t let you off easy!"
This shrill voice of Abao’s was even more irritating to the man’s ears. "You androgynous freak, are you asking for a beating? You act so arrogant, believe it or not, Grandpa here will punch you flat?"
"Wow, that’s some big talk, punch me flat? We’ll have to see if you’ve got the skills for it. Want me to give you a little training, teach you what it means to know your place?" Abao said, rolling up his sleeves, ready to fight. Being able to accompany his master wasn’t something just anyone could do. Not only did one need to have the master’s favor, but one’s martial skills also had to be solid. Otherwise, who would protect the master in danger? Although there were always Shadow Guards accompanying them on every outing, they would not appear unless it was critical. So, it was up to the likes of him to handle common affairs. Some rough fellow like this one he could dispatch in two or three moves.
"Practice? Let’s practice. You think Grandpa’s afraid of a freak like you? Today I must make you kneel and call me ’Grandpa’ three times," the man was also hot-tempered, and being provoked by Abao, he didn’t think of anything else, only focused on wanting to flatten Abao and make him admit defeat and apologize.
Seeing that Abao was really about to fight with someone, Huangfu Jing frowned and scolded, "Stop it, it’s just a trivial matter with no real enmity. Just a few words exchanged, is it really worth fighting over? Abao, you’re regressing the more you live. I didn’t bring you out to cause trouble; have you forgotten all the rules?"
Realizing his mistake when he heard Huangfu Jing’s words, Abao immediately knelt down to beg for forgiveness. "This servant knows his guilt, please punish me, my lord."
"Enough, let there not be a next time, otherwise you can go and take your punishment yourself," Huangfu Jing’s mind was still filled with the fleeting glimpse of beauty he had seen just now, and he had no interest in fussing over a servant’s mistake, only speaking out because he felt he had gone too far.
The man who was previously full of rage and ready to fight with Abao, seeing Abao kneel down and beg for mercy, felt that it was not so serious. Such a small matter, and yet this person was so anxious to beg for forgiveness. When he glanced at the cool and distant Huangfu Jing, he knew he must be a big shot.
Not only was this man handsome and dignified, but his conversation also exuded a noble air that gave off a sense of authority. It made him not dare to be reckless. Before Huangfu Jing even looked his way, he turned tail and ran, afraid of getting involved in trouble. Such a person was definitely not something he could afford to provoke. He still had his wife and children to think about and decided it was better not to dwell on rash impulses.
Abao himself was ready to make amends with the man, but seeing him scurrying away dejectedly, he sighed inwardly, "Indeed, it is the presence of the master that scared him off with such ease."
With the situation resolved, Huangfu Jing looked back to where he had seen the woman, but she was nowhere to be found. Even as he searched in that direction, the lovely figure that had caught his eye had disappeared. Giving Abao a fierce glance, his expression turned suddenly gloomy.
Having been with Huangfu Jing for many years, Abao knew all too well what his master was thinking. Sweat began to bead on his forehead as he silently chastised himself, "You had it coming, now you’ve done it. The girl the master had his eye on is gone, who knows how he’ll deal with you now. Oh, Abao, if you’re not more careful, you might lose your head before you even know it."
Lin Yue always felt a gaze fixed on her, yet when she turned around, she saw nothing. Fortunately, the sensation soon vanished, and she figured it was probably just a fluke, so she let go of the concern.
Zhao Erhu, however, was constantly watching Lin Yue and thus noticed her unusual behavior right away. Seeing his little wife frown and look behind, he followed suit, although he saw nothing amiss, he was a bit puzzled, "Wife, what’s the matter, is there something wrong?"
Lin Yue shook her head, "It’s nothing. I just felt like someone was staring at me, but the feeling is gone now. It must have been my imagination."
Lin Yue spoke nonchalantly, but Zhao Erhu’s heart tightened upon hearing this. He took his wife’s feelings seriously, so he kept a vigilant eye on their surroundings. It took a while for him not to sense anything unusual which allowed him to relax and bring Lin Yue to a wonton stall.
The wonton stall was crowded and they had to queue for a good fifteen minutes before they finally got a couple of seats. Zhao Erhu quickly pulled Lin Yue down to sit, "Boss, two bowls of wontons, please."
"Wife, I heard from Brother Li that the wontons here are particularly delicious. This stall has been set up for decades and has always done good business. It’s said that the wonton recipe is a family heirloom. I specifically brought you here to try it."
"Seeing how many people there are, all waiting in line, it must be good."
The wontons were quickly served. Instead of eating first, Zhao Erhu picked up a steaming wonton, cooled it down, and fed it to Lin Yue, watching her tenderly, "How is it? Does it taste good?"
Lin Yue, used to being fed by Zhao Erhu, found nothing amiss. The wonton did taste exceptional and had an indescribable flavor, probably the so-called family recipe Zhao Erhu mentioned. She nodded with a smile.
"Delicious. This is my first time tasting such delicious wontons. I don’t know what unique ingredient the owner adds that makes it extraordinarily savory. No wonder the business has been booming for decades. It’s a pity I can’t discern exactly what’s added, or else I’d be able to make them at home," Lin Yue said with a twinge of regret.
Zhao Erhu chuckled as he patted Lin Yue’s head, "You’re really greedy, Niuniu. There are many capable people in Capital City, yet none have figured it out. How could it be so easy to decipher? It’s their secret recipe, after all. If it was so easily replicated, it wouldn’t be a secret, and they couldn’t have stayed in business all these years."
"That’s true. So we should come here more often in the future. Maybe we can get a hint of what’s in it. Even if we can’t reverse-engineer the recipe, enjoying the taste is quite nice. Once we return to Xin’an City, we won’t be able to find such delicious wontons. Don’t just feed me, have some yourself too. If it’s not enough, how about we order two more bowls?"
