“Huh? Why would you think that?”
“Because he’s got too many negative effects stacked against him.”
“???”
He’s a Miskatonic University student and he’s missing. It would be better if he were dead than turned into some kind of creature and live a worse life than death.
However, choosing Miskatonic University, this is an inevitable path for him.
“Anyway, let’s try to find him first.”
“How should we look for him?”
“Before he disappeared, he had called his father and said that he would stay at an inn in Cornwall for the night. Since he drove to Cornwall, he should have taken the same route as us. So, all we have to do is check along this road… Oh, we don’t actually need to bother, there’s only one inn here. We can take the picture and ask around there.”
Duanmu Huai quickly found the answer after scanning the map. In fact, it isn’t that difficult, as this road is seldom used by people, so there aren’t many inns. Only one inn can be found along the way, Duanmu Huai just plans to ask around at the inn. If there’s no information then they’ll drop the matter, it’s not a big deal anyway.
As Mary has pointed out, if he suddenly lost control of his vehicle and plunged off a cliff, there’s no way Duanmu Huai could find him.
Although the terrain here doesn’t seem like it has any cliffs or precipices.
Gotta say, the infrastructure here is really below par. Although the road is passable, there are no street lights once you leave the main road, it’s pitch black all around at night. Duanmu Huai feels that the possibility Mary suggested isn’t out of the question — after all, there are no cameras or street lights here. If that rich boy were drunk and drove into the lake, he could very well disappear without a trace.
Of course, this is just a small task. Whether they find him or not is a different story. It’s all on the way anyway, so Duanmu Huai didn’t think too much about it.
“This place really is desolate…”
Looking out the car window at the scenery, Mary couldn’t help but express her sentiment. Having lived in Fog City all her life, she was used to seeing populated places. It was her first time seeing a road as desolate as this.
“If you’re going to Cornwall, most would choose to take the train. I mainly don’t want to waste time.”
Duanmu Huai said as he glanced over the map. As he put it, whether it’s people or goods going from Fog City to Cornwall, they usually take the railway. Driving is inconvenient and far. If not for Duanmu Huai’s build making train travel troublesome, he would’ve chosen to take the train instead of having his maid drive.
This explains why very few people choose to drive to Cornwall. The fact that they didn’t encounter a single car on this road all day is confirmation enough.
“Ah, Mr. Duanmu, there are lights up ahead, could it be the inn?”
“Hmm?”
Upon hearing Mary’s excited words, Duanmu Huai also lifted his head and looked out the car window. Sure enough, they saw lights on by the roadside in the distance — it seems this must be the inn.
“Alright, let’s go take a look.”
Although Duanmu Huai was prepared for the fact that the inn here wouldn’t be a fancy one, he was still taken aback when he saw it.
“Good lord… This place is really rundown.”
“Haah…”
Even Mary looked at the inn before them with a confounded expression, unsure of what to say.
As Duanmu Huai said, the inn looked very dilapidated. Although it wasn’t uninhabitable, the oil lamps hanging outside were a bit much.
It felt like seeing a candle-lit inn in the 21st century, indicating that this godforsaken place didn’t even have electricity.
It’s amazing that this place is still in business…
Duanmu Huai looked around before walking up the steps and pushing open the door.
“Ding dong…”
As the door was pushed open, the bell hanging on it rang out. Stepping into the lobby, there was no one at the front desk. On the desk was an oil lamp and a bell. Behind the desk, mounted on the wall, were two wild boar heads. Between the two boar heads hung a double-barreled shotgun, giving the place an old-fashioned vibe.
But what was most striking were the license plates hanging on either side of the wall. The plates seemed very old and varied, making the place feel more like a license plate exhibition. Duanmu Huai glanced around before making his way to the front desk and pressing the bell.
Aided by the ring of the bell, an elderly man with white hair emerged from a door behind the reception, pushing a wheelchair. The man in the wheelchair was of similar age. Upon seeing Duanmu Huai, both men were momentarily startled, but they stepped forward nonetheless.
“Welcome to Lakeside Inn, ladies and gentlemen.”
The elderly man pushing the wheelchair nodded politely at the group.
“I am Williams, this is my brother Robert.”
As he spoke he motioned to the elderly man in the wheelchair, then wore an apologetic smile.
“I’m sorry, Robert doesn’t speak much. He had a little accident a few years back… This inn is run by me and my brother, oh, I apologize, I ramble when I get old. Are you here for a stay?”
