Chapter 739: Chapter 539 Invitation_4 Chapter 739: Chapter 539 Invitation_4 Duanmu Huai curled his lips, this was pretty much the status quo with magic in the world of Cthulhu, no matter what kind of magic you used, it would typically kill the summoner first.

For instance, the very first cultist they ever encountered in the mansion summoned a Scary Snake, only for the said snake to promptly turn around and devour the cultist who had summoned it.

This kind of thing had happened countless times, so it would be easy to understand Duanmu Huai and Lorena’s response to this situation.

“In short, this is all the information we have for now.”

Duanmu Huai reached out and patted the heads of the black cat and white rabbit poking out of his pocket.

“As for the rest, I reckon we’ll know more once we get there.”

After that, Duanmu Huai and Lorena arrived at the Devon County Police Station, reported their identities, and were then taken to the mortuary where the bodies were stored.

“To be honest, I’m not the type to believe in myths and legends,” the chubby coroner in the white lab coat said, making heavy work of his footsteps as he walked ahead of Duanmu Huai.

“But frankly, what I’ve seen this time has scared the living daylights out of me.”

“Were you part of the blockade that night?”

“No, of course not.”

The Chubby coroner shook his head.

“With my physique, I would’ve been just offering myself up as food. But let me tell you, the people of Devon County will never forget what happened that night; the gunshots, screams, shouts… Honestly, this quiet place has never seen such uproar before. By the time I was called in, it had already spiraled out of control…”

“So, regarding the Baskerville family, are there any promising leads? Including the previous victims?”

“Oh, of course.”

The chubby coroner moved to his desk, then with difficulty rose onto his tiptoes to open the highest filing cabinet, where he pulled out several autopsy reports.

“According to the order in which they died, first it was Old Mr. Baskerville. He was a highly respected doctor and a respectable man. He was found collapsed on a small path outside his mansion in the early morning, with no external injuries. The cause of death was found to be a heart attack — for a man in his eighties, this wasn’t really unexpected.”

“So it was deemed an accident at the time?”

“Of course, the police conducted an investigation and concluded that Old Mr. Baskerville had probably gone out for a stroll, suffered a sudden illness on his way back, and collapsed… It’s too normal to be considered unexpected.”

While talking, the chubby coroner took out another file.

“Next we have his son, Mr. Charles, who died in the evening after dinner. According to the testimony, he and his wife went out for a walk after their meal and never returned. As night fell, everyone began to worry, so they set out looking for them and eventually found their bodies — their necks had been torn open and the bodies were tragically disfigured, evidently from some sort of large animal attack. However, as you probably know, there are no large animals around here, not even many wolves.”

The chubby coroner paused for breath at this juncture.

“Then we have their son, Fred. He was very angry and heartbroken by the deaths of his parents. He was convinced it was the work of a wild animal, so he picked up a hunting dog, rounded up a group of people and a slew of hunting dogs, and went up to the mountains, vowing to track down the beast that had killed his parents.”

“And so he ended up following in their footsteps?”

“Yes.”

The chubby coroner heaved a sigh of resignation.

“His head was completely smashed, the autopsy revealed that he had likely been killed by a bear. God, I didn’t even know there were bears in Devon County!”

“So it seems it has nothing to do with the Hellhound, then?”

“Oh, that’s true. However, several people who made the trek to the mountains claimed that they didn’t see a bear, rather they encountered a fearsome, larger-than-human, black hunting dog. Thus, we set a trap in an attempt to catch the beast……”

The chubby coroner paused for breath again before continuing.

“Well, the facts speak for themselves, you’ll understand once you see for yourself.”

With that, the chubby coroner went to the morgue refrigerator, and then pulled open the door.
