Chapter 1150 - Chapter 1150 Chapter 789 Partner
Chapter 1150: Chapter 789: Partner Chapter 1150: Chapter 789: Partner The trembling girl got into the car and quickly drove away. At the same time, the ringing of a phone echoed in D’s ear.
“Good job, D, the commission is complete, I’ve transferred the money to your account. How was working with Lucy’s partner?”
“Not bad, usable.”
D replied indifferently. In the past, such tasks were always left to Lumiaire, but they were just ordinary jobs that any hacker could handle. At least for now, Lucy seemed quite competent in that respect.
“Well, that’s good. By the way, did you wipe out the Vortex Gang?”
“Is that a problem?”
“No… The NCPD is over the moon, you know, the crime rate in the whole block dropped by several percentage points after you showed up… It’s just that some people are not so happy about it.”
“They will soon have no reason to be unhappy.”
“Ah…”
Logue sighed lightly upon hearing D’s indifferent response.
“D, I understand what you’re thinking, but you also have to consider the situation. Indeed, the Vortex Gang is disgusting, as are the Scavengers… To be honest, I wish they could be completely eradicated too, but it’s impossible, you understand? There are things only they can do. But look at what you’ve done. You’ve been in Night City for only half a month, and you’ve almost wiped out all the Scavengers and the Vortex Gang. You aren’t some hero…”
“You’ve given me plenty of these types of missions yourself.”
“That’s because I didn’t expect you to be so effective…”
At this point, Logue also felt a headache coming on. During the half-month of working with D, Logue found that this girl not only had old-school ideas but also an old-school style. In Night City, gangs run rampant and naturally, everyone dislikes them. But most people stick to the idea that it’s better to mind their own business and just steer clear when they see a gang bullying someone.
Even if a crime occurs, it’s hard for the NCPD to arrive in time; the reason is simple–they’re underpaid, and it’s not worth risking their lives against these desperados.
But D is different. Whenever a crime happened, she would arrive at the scene faster than the NCPD and leave no gang member alive. Besides, she was never idle, often raiding and robbing gang bastions, especially the Vortex Gang and Scavengers, whom she hit so hard they could barely take care of themselves. Now she had even killed the boss of the Vortex Gang…
“Indeed, the security of this block has improved a lot, and everyone is grateful to you, but what’s the use? You’ve just attracted more troublesome characters. Playing the hero in Night City doesn’t end well.”
“Those guys are pretty rich.”
D replied nonchalantly. In fact, she had plundered quite a bit from the gangs. Her luxury apartment in the city center and that white Stone Sword sports car were obtained through the “flesh and blood” (literally) of those gangsters. After all, taking commissions from Logue wasn’t that profitable; it wasn’t as good as biting the hand that feeds one. Indeed, without windfall profits, one couldn’t get rich.
No wonder heroes didn’t need to produce anything to eat meat and drink wine in large quantities; there’s a lot of money in the bandit dens.
No matter how hard one deceives and cheats, in the end, it’s the hero who benefits. D didn’t care what the gang members thought; she only knew she was now ridiculously wealthy.
“You know that’s not what I mean.”
“I know, just like this commission, right?”
D snorted. She was not foolish, after all. Even if this was the Vortex Gang’s lair, their defenses were a bit too tight. And according to Lucy’s Scouting, all those automatic turrets and mines were military-grade. How could the Vortex Gang, even with some reputation, get their hands on such equipment?
Plainly, someone was displeased with her actions and had set a trap through this commission, hoping to kill or capture her.
Unfortunately, without the diamond drill, one shouldn’t take on porcelain work. To deal with herself, the Vortex Gang was not enough.
What a joke. As the Judge investigating the Hive City, she had experienced similar situations countless times. These minor scuffles of Night City were hardly impressive to D.
“Honestly, I really don’t understand what you want to do in Night City. Do you want to become a legend of Night City?”
“Legend? I have no interest in such boring things.”
“So what do you want to do?”
“When the time comes, you will know.”
After saying that, D cut off the communication and nodded at Lucy, who was walking towards her.
“You’ve worked hard. So, about the payment… Let’s split it fifty-fifty.”
“Huh?”
Lucy was quite surprised to hear D’s suggestion. Normally, hackers only get thirty percent, unless it’s a special mission requiring data retrieval or theft since their role is supportive. The real fighters are on the front lines. And D was a famous mercenary in Night City, while she herself was just a newcomer to Night City. In Lucy’s mind, it would have been good enough if D had agreed to an eighty-twenty split; a fifty-fifty was astonishing.
“Can I really take that much?”
Looking at the transaction details on her screen, Lucy swallowed hard. After all, no matter where it was, money was needed. She had just arrived in Night City not long ago and didn’t have much to her name; this amount could comfortably tide her over a difficult period.
