Chapter 1145 - Chapter 1145 Chapter 786 Looking for a Job_2
Chapter 1145: Chapter 786: Looking for a Job_2 Chapter 1145: Chapter 786: Looking for a Job_2 Although rumors about Duanmu Huai smoking, drinking, and fighting in groups often circulated when he was in school, in fact, Duanmu Huai didn’t smoke nor was he fond of alcohol. Likewise, he didn’t like going to noisy places like KTVs or dance halls; he had a natural love for peace and quiet. So, one could imagine that a place filled with drunkards, deafening rock music, and a strong smell of smoke was the last place Duanmu Huai wanted to be.
“Hey, wait up, kid.”
Just as Duanmu Huai was walking down the stairs and reaching the front door of the Next Life Night Club, a burly man about as tall as the original Duanmu Huai blocked his path — well, one could tell just by looking at his muscular physique that it was definitely packed with various types of implants.
The man stood there with his arms crossed, looking at the girl in front of him — although the character Duanmu Huai had created was not a Lolita, she was only about sixteen or seventeen, naturally of average girl’s height.
“This isn’t a place for you, get out of here.”
Facing the man’s call, the girl stared at him and then spoke.
“I’m here to be a mercenary, looking for a middleman.”
“Ha, ha, ha, ha, a mercenary?”
Upon hearing the girl’s reply, the man immediately burst into laughter, and so did the others standing along the corridor.
“You, a little brat, want to be a mercenary? This isn’t some child’s play, kid, leave now or I’ll throw you out!”
Confronted by Duanmu Huai’s words, the big guy scoffed. The girl before him was clad in a white robe, her face largely shadowed by the hood she wore, and she had on a pair of holographic information glasses. Although her appearance resembled that of a hacker, anyone with cybernetic eyes could scan and see that this kid didn’t have any implants installed, just an ordinary “native.”
A native referred to those without any implants. Naturally, in this world, only children of poor families couldn’t afford implants and retained their native states, but for most people, implants were very handy and brought many benefits. Thus, even the poor opted to install one or two implants when possible.
To the big man, the kid before him was likely just another newbie who had heard too much about the Next Life and picked up this set of clothes from some trash pile, thinking to make a debut here.
“Alright, scram now, kid, or I’ll really throw you out.”
“So, I can’t go in?”
“Of course, I’m not going to repeat myself, kid…”
However, the big man didn’t finish his sentence because at that moment, the girl had already clenched her fist and swung a punch directly at his abdomen. In the next moment, the big man was sent flying backward, smashing open the doors of the Next Life Night Club and ending up embedded in the wall.
“…”
Seeing this scene, those who had just been mocking Duanmu Huai fell silent, their eyes wide with surprise as they gazed at the girl. She then calmly walked through the door the big man had smashed open and entered the nightclub.
“What happened? What’s going on?”
As Duanmu Huai just stepped through the entrance, he saw two fully armed men rush over, also shocked by the scene before them. The big man who had been smashed into the wall was also beginning to lift his hand, pointing at the white-robed girl.
“It, it was this brat! Catch her!”
“…”
At the latter’s shout, the two security guards didn’t hesitate, reaching out to grab the girl. However, facing these burly security guards, Duanmu Huai didn’t dodge or flinch. Clenching his fists, he took a step forward. The next moment, both guards were sent flying, crashing into the bar like trash cans, sending everyone nearby hurriedly stepping out of the way.
“You’re asking for it, kid!”
At this point, the first big man had clambered out from the dent in the wall, his gaze burning with anger. He then raised his handgun and aimed it at the opponent, while the other two guards Duanmu Huai had knocked aside pulled out their weapons and pulled the trigger.
“Bang, bang, bang, bang, bang!!”
A series of gunshots rang out, which by all logic, should have peppered anyone with holes like a wasp’s nest.
Yet, an unimaginable scene occurred.
After a series of gunshots, the white-robed girl was still standing in place. Around her, dozens of bullets seemed to freeze midair, then the girl simply tilted her head, and the bullets clinked onto the ground.
What the hell was going on?
Upon witnessing this scene, everyone was stunned, their minds racing with doubts–perhaps they had taken too many drugs or watched too many dark-sunglass dreams, resulting in hallucinations. For a moment, a dead silence fell around them, even the security guards who had fired the guns were gaping and only scrambled to reload their magazines when they came to their senses.
Just then, a voice rang out.
“What’s going on?”
Hearing this voice, the crowd that had gathered around swiftly parted, and they saw a woman walking towards them with composure. Her hair was combed to the right side, and she had dark circles under her eyes. She first glanced at the panicked security guards, then turned her gaze toward the white-robed girl in front of her, frowning.
“Who are you? What are you doing here?”
“D.”
The girl responded to the woman’s inquiry; her soft voice blew through everyone’s ears like a breeze, sending shivers down their spine.
“I’m here to become a mercenary, so I’m looking for a formidable intermediary.”
“………”
The woman closely observed the girl up and down for a while after hearing her answer, then made a gesture.
“Then, come with me.”
If it had been someone else, they would probably be overjoyed at the woman’s words, but the girl just stared at her and asked,
“Who are you? Are you very skilled?”
“My name is Logue, and I’m in charge here. Come with me.”
After saying this, Logue turned and walked away, and the girl followed her without hesitation. Led by Logue, the two of them reached a private room deep inside the night club.
“You said you want to be a mercenary?”
Logue scrutinized the girl carefully, frowning. She was certain she had never seen her before, and after a scan, she could determine that the girl was indeed native–she had no implants on her body.
However, how could a girl without any implants have defeated three security guards from the Next Life Night Club?
“How did you manage that just now?”
“By persisting, one can become stronger,”
Duanmu Huai–or rather, D spoke.
“Relying on mechanical modifications is simply a petty technique, a craft not worthy of mention.”
“You’re bold to say that.”
Logue scoffed at D’s comment, flicking the ash from her cigarette. If it had been anyone else, it would likely have been taken as a joke, but the D in front of her possessed real, proven combat ability…
“Interesting, how about you work under me?”
Logue eyed D, unable to deny that despite her mysterious origins, she was indeed skilled. Logue had seen how she tackled those security guards, and of course, knocking down a few unarmed guards was nothing noteworthy. But blocking bullets–that wasn’t something Logue believed could be done by any implant.
So, how did she do it?
Curiosity filled Logue as well.
Looking at Logue, D thought for a moment, then nodded.
“Okay.”
