Chapter 33: The Sisters

The warship travelled very fast. In less than an hour, the students arrived at the Fifth Legion’s base.

As they disembarked from the warship, they realized that their training location was not at the base of the Fifth Legion but in a smaller base next to it. There was a 20-meter-high wall separating the two bases.

Standing at the training base, the students’ view was blocked by the wall. Yet, from time to time, they could still see mechas and destroyers assembling in the sky above, then majestically flying out from the legion base.

Even though the students could only watch these awe-inspiring scenes from afar, they were thrilled enough to scream and cheer.

Arix was among one of the excited students. She clutched Drexel’s arm and shouted, "Look, that’s a Star-Class mecha, isn’t it? It’s just as cool as I imagined."

"It’s okay," Drexel replied, his eyes filled with envy. "You haven’t seen Grandfather’s Supergiant-Class mecha, right? It’s named Mercury. That’s really something."

"Supergiant-Class mecha? I’ve heard that mechas of this class might eventually evolve into legendary mechanical beings called Omnic. Legends say they have nearly godlike powers," Arix said, her eyes sparkling with excitement.

"That’s just a legend, after all. So far, I’ve never actually seen any mecha turn into a mechanical being," Drexel said dismissively.

"Humph, I think I’ll definitely be able to create a god-level mecha with a mechanical life someday," Arix retorted with high spirits.

"Being confident is good, but being overconfident can lead to your downfall. Take it easy, we’re not like the villains on TV with absurd talents," Drexel said, not believing her one bit. He couldn’t help but lecture Arix, feeling she was almost boasting too much.

Arix rolled her eyes and huffed. Seeing that everyone had already disembarked from the warship and gathered, she didn’t want to say more, so she stopped paying attention to Drexel.

"Meet at the training field at 8 AM tomorrow, and you have free time today. As usual, based on your numbers, find your dorms. Six people per room. As for the dorm leader, you can recommend someone and report it to Virtanen tomorrow. I now declare you dismissed," Ortiz instructed after everyone had gathered.

Then he and Bauer turned and left.

After the instructors left, other new students who had arrived at the base earlier boldly approached to find people they knew from before.

Two pretty girls approached Drexel.

Watching the sisters in front of her, Arix raised an eyebrow. She watched the trio with a gossip-hungry gaze, and then she especially took a few good looks at Drexel, eagerly anticipating some drama.

"Drexel, did you really get a girlfriend?" asked Azura, one of the two girls, blinked her eyes cutely.

The girl next to Azura didn’t speak, but her eyes were curious. She seemed nervously intrigued as she looked at Drexel.

Her name was Calista. She had been kidnapped by traffickers ten years ago. During the three days she was held captive, she witnessed the tragic fates of many girls.

The traffickers wanted to sell her for a good price, so they didn’t harm her to avoid leaving scars. Otherwise, she would have suffered the nightmare torment like the other girls.

In that hell, she waited desperately for three days. Just when she was about to be sold and had resolved to end her own life, someone burst into the room, interrupting her as she was about to commit suicide with a shard of glass.

Initially, Calista numbly looked up when she heard the door being smashed open. But soon, she realized that the intruder was just a boy not much older than her. A spark of hope flashed in her eyes, and she let go of the glass shard, feeling a vague sense of anticipation.

Drexel quickly realized that Calista was not his missing sister. Although disappointed, he calmed his urgent feelings. He gently reassured the frightened girl, "Don’t be scared. The army is coming soon."

After saying that, Drexel hurriedly moved on to the next room holding abducted children, still hoping to find his sister.

Shortly after he left, Calista was rescued along with many other children by soldiers who arrived soon after.

Later, when her father came to pick her up, Calista saw that boy again. This time, she gathered the courage to tug at her father’s sleeve and asked curiously and timidly, "Dad, who is that boy?"

Her father looked in the direction his daughter was pointing and was surprised to see Rear Admiral Kering and his son. He smiled and stroked Calista’s hair, saying, "That’s Rear Admiral Kering and his second son, Drexel."

"Are they also looking for someone?" Calista asked, pursing her lips carefully.

"Yes, I heard Rear Admiral Kering’s daughter is missing. I’ve seen that child; she’s a lively little girl. I hope the Kering family finds her soon," her father replied, ready to take Calista home.

As her father led her away, little Calista prayed for Drexel, hoping he would soon find his sister.

As Calista recalled the past, she felt somewhat dazed.

Over the years, she had often seen Drexel on TV and in the news. Today was the first time she had met him in person again.

Meanwhile, Drexel, the hero of the hour, hadn’t even noticed Calista. Perhaps he had long forgotten that he had once inadvertently saved a little girl.

When Azura asked him that question, Drexel initially wanted to say no. But seeing Arix’s annoyingly smug expression, his eyes narrowed, and he flashed a mischievous smile.

"Yeah, isn’t she right beside you?" Drexel said, throwing a flirtatious glance at Arix.

Calista looked towards Arix upon hearing Drexel’s words. She noticed that although the girl was thin, she had beautiful features and actually matched Drexel quite well.

"Ah, so that’s Drexel’s type," Azura didn’t say much, but her gaze at Arix was a mix of challenge and disdain.

Clearly, Azura was a die-hard fan of Drexel and had already seen Arix as an enemy.

Arix, innocent in this conflict, twitched her mouth and glared fiercely at Drexel.

In the next moment, Arix pretended to be affectionate and looped her arms through Drexel’s. Under the cover, her fingers fiercely pinched the soft flesh of Drexel’s waist as she sweetly said, "Oh, I just love Drexel so much right now."

Her voice grew sweeter as her pinching grew fiercer.

Drexel winced from the pain, feeling like that patch of flesh might bruise. He wanted to concede to Arix, but with two other girls there, he couldn’t swallow his pride.

After a while, once Arix’s own hand hurt from the pinching, she finally let go, satisfied. Mimicking Drexel’s earlier flirtation, she threw him a coquettish look, saying, "You chat with the girls; I’m off to the dorm."

Drexel, in too much pain to speak, managed to weakly wave his hand, trying not to break his persona.

Arix then gave Azura and her friend a gentle, fake smile, feeling quite pleased with herself as she walked towards the dormitory area.
