Chapter 164: Meeting The Three Little Ones
Matis raised an eyebrow, thinking Arix was about to show him how to make Arix Crystals.
Curious, he nodded and asked, "I don’t know. Can you tell me?"
With a mysterious smile and a wink, Arix replied, "You’ll know in a moment, Grandpa."
Matis chuckled and tapped Arix’s forehead affectionately. "Haha, you’re just teasing me now."
Arix giggled, "Don’t rush, Grandpa. Did you bring the Insectoid Core the legion needs?"
"Yes," Matis confirmed, pulling out a Space Button and a piece of paper filled with notes, handing them to Arix.
"Arix, these are the Arix Crystals the legion needs. There’s quite a lot, so take your time making them. No need to hurry," Matis advised with concern.
Arix nodded, took the paper and Space Button. He memorized the contents, and then put it all into her own Space Button.
"Grandpa, it’s time to witness a miracle. Cupid, Vita, Sophia, come out and meet Grandpa," Arix said, summoning three little tigers with wings.
The cute little tigers appeared on Matis’s desk.
Matis’s eyelids trembled slightly at the sight. He had guessed Arix might have a Psychic Incarnation, but seeing them was still surprising.
Psychic Incarnations were common among the five noble families, but each generation usually had only one youth with it.
Now the Kering family had two kids with Psychic Incarnations, and that was totally out of Matis’ expectation. It was like a family that always had one child per generation suddenly having twins. It brought both joy and surprise.
With mixed feelings, Matis greeted the three little tigers, "Hello, little ones."
"Hello, Grandpa," the three tigers responded, placing their paws on Matis’s palm with cute sounds.
Though Matis didn’t understand their words, he guessed their meaning. He gently patted their small heads, and Cupid even enjoyed rubbing against his palm.
"Grandpa, why don’t you look surprised?" Arix asked, puzzled.
Matis looked at Arix, confused. "What’s there to be surprised about?"
"Cupid and the others are Psychic Incarnations! Shouldn’t you be amazed and astonished?" Arix exclaimed, showing an exaggerated expression of astonishment.
Matis laughed at her acting. Shaking his head affectionately, he said, "Drexel also has a Psychic Incarnation, a little tiger named Sheer, I think."
"Drexel has one too?!" Arix was genuinely astonished this time.
"Not just Drexel. All five noble families have them. Even your father has one, but he’s a two-tailed cat named Phantom," Matis added, as if that wasn’t enough of a shock.
Arix’s eyes widened dramatically, as if she’d just swallowed a giant elephant. When she looked back at Matis, her eyes had changed.
"Grandpa, do you and Kellan also have one?" she asked, doubting everything.
"I do, but Kellan doesn’t," Matis said, shaking his head with a smile.
"Why doesn’t Kellan have one? Is he adopted?" Arix held her face in her hands, her imagination running wild.
She started thinking maybe Kellan was the orphaned child of a friend and was adopted by her kind-hearted parents. Or perhaps he was the heir of another family, sent to the Kering family for protection. Or maybe he was a cute little beggar her parents found and decided to adopt...
Matis almost laughed at her wild thoughts. "If Kellan heard you say that, he’d definitely give you a good scolding."
Arix sheepishly touched her nose. "It’s just that everyone has one except him. It seems strange."
Matis shook his head. "Kellan perfectly inherited his grandmother——my wife’s ability, so the Kering family’s Psychic Incarnation and your mother’s bloodline couldn’t be passed on to him."
"Did Grandma have an ability?" Arix asked. She knew she had a grandmother named Frances, but Frances had passed away many years ago, so she didn’t know much about her.
Matis’s eyes softened, and his voice carried a noticeable trace of longing. "Frances’s ability was both a blessing and a curse. But let’s not dwell on that. Arix, you haven’t shown me how to make Arix Crystals yet, and I’m getting getting impatient."
Seeing that Matis didn’t want to talk about it, Arix wisely changed the subject. "Okay, Grandpa, just wait a moment."
Arix handed the Space Button filled with Insectoid Cores to Cupid and said, "Cupid, it’s your turn."
"No problem," Cupid nodded, wagging his tail happily as he hugged the Space Button.
Right in front of them, Cupid started munching on the Insectoid Cores.
At first, Matis watched Cupid eat with a calm expression, though slightly puzzled. But as Cupid ate box after box without stopping, Matis’s expression grew more and more unusual.
"Arix, is it okay for the little one to eat so much? Won’t the Psychic Incarnation get damaged?" Matis asked, frowning with worry.
"Grandpa, it’s fine. Cupid only eats the violent psychic power inside the Insectoid Cores, so it just looks like he’s eating a lot," Arix explained with a smile, watching Cupid devour the cores.
"Oh, that’s good," Matis sighed in relief. Then he looked at Arix curiously. "Arix, why haven’t you started making the Arix Crystals yet?"
"Hmm? I’ve already started," Arix said innocently, blinking her eyes.
Matis looked at her, noting she hadn’t moved her feet, hands, or even used any psychic power. For the first time, he blew his beard in exasperation at Arix. "I am not that old yet. Don’t try to fool me. You haven’t done anything."
"Ah! Grandpa, you think I’m the one making the Arix Crystals, don’t you?" Arix finally realized.
"If it’s not you, then is it this little guy?" Matis rolled his eyes and pointed at Cupid.
To his surprise, Arix nodded. "Yes, it’s Cupid."
Arix and Matis locked eyes for a moment.
Then Cupid let out a loud burp, got up, and hopped to the corner of the study, sniffing around.
Finally, Cupid found a spot he liked and pulled out a large box designed for storing Arix Crystals.
"Arix, what is Cupid up to? If he needs to use the bathroom, he should do that elsewhere. This box is for Arix Crystals, using it as a potty is a waste," Matis said, feeling a bit upset.
This box was crafted with space stone and Supergiant-Class isolation materials. Each one cost ten million astrocredits.
Even though the Kering family was rich, it still stung a little.
"Grandpa, Cupid is putting Arix Crystals in the box," Arix said innocently.
Matis just stood there, speechless.
This sounded way too absurd.
His lips moved, but he couldn’t bring himself to scold Arix.
He sighed inwardly and gave up. ’Fine, if it makes Arix happy, I can live with it even if the box is used as a potty.’
Watching Cupid open the box and prepare to use it as his potty, Matis’ mouth twitched. He quickly looked away.
At least if he didn’t see it, it wouldn’t hurt as much.
"Grandpa, why aren’t you watching Cupid?" Arix reminded him, noticing Matis seemed distracted.
After all, Cupid was about to produce Arix Crystals. It would be a shame to miss it.
Matis took a deep breath and then turned to Arix with a strained smile. "I’m watching, I’m watching it now."
’It’s just watching ten million astrocredits being wasted, right?’ He used to fight insectoids on battlefields and never got afraid. He didn’t know why he felt a bit nervous to watch this.
Matis clutched his chest, ready to rub it when the heartache came.
Cupid stepped on the edge of the box a few times to make sure it was stable.
In Matis’ horrified gaze, he squatted on the Arix Crystal box.
Then thousands of Arix Crystals poured out of Cupid.
Feeling relieved with an empty stomach, Cupid sighed contentedly.
Then he flew up, kicked the box closed, and went back to munching on an Insectoid Core.
After witnessing how Arix Crystals were made, Matis stood frozen as if struck by lightning.
Remembering that he had once drunk a potion made from these crystals, he closed his eyes in desperation.
"Cupid is really amazing, right?" Arix said, oblivious to Matis’ desperation. Her tone carried a hint of pride.
"Well... yeah... amazing... so amazing," Matis stammered, his mind filled with the image of the steaming Arix Crystals.
"Hehe." Arix blushed a little, feeling shy from the praise.
Remembering she had to go to military school tomorrow, she decided to turn in early.
"Grandpa, it’s getting late. I’m going to my room to sleep," Arix said, bidding Matis goodnight.
