Chapter 27: Chapter 27 - Adorable

"Phew."

Lucien let out a long breath of relief. If he’d been a second slower, he would’ve died without even knowing why. Thank the heavens he leveled up beforehand.

He glanced at the now-defeated Slime Boss and smirked. Those Slime Plushies were more useful than expected.

He used them both as a distraction and as stepping stones to get close. The plan worked flawlessly.

For once, he allowed himself a quiet moment of pride.

Then...

A sudden wave of system notifications broke the silence.

[Ting!]

[You killed the Slime Boss. You gained 1 gold coins.]

<You Leveled Up>

<Inventory +1>

<Congratulations: Level 20 Reached!>

[Ting!]

<Achievement: The Dungeon Bows>

Slay a Dungeon Boss for the first time

Rewards: All loots dropped by the Boss has an increased in rarity

...

Lucien was speechless. For once, words failed him.

Another Job Skill has been unlocked and it looked like a potential trump card. If he used it right, he might just become unstoppable.

Like the other job skills, this new skill wasn’t listed in his SKILLPEDIA which only made him more eager to test it out.

But first...

"The drops, of course!"

He grinned like a child on their birthday.

At his feet lay a golden cube and more intriguingly... a golden card.

He didn’t activate Auto-Collect.

One of the things he’d learned was that with a bit of will, he could stop the automatic pickup. Once before, he’d even redirected it to intercept a flying dagger during the battle with the assassins.

As far as he could tell, Auto-Collect was both an active and passive skill depending on how he used it. It wasn’t listed in the SKILLPEDIA which meant he’d had to figure it out himself.

Right now, he didn’t want shortcuts.

He wanted to feel it.

The thrill of picking up loot with his own hands!

The satisfaction of claiming hard-earned rewards!

Lucien crouched and picked up the golden cube first. His fingers tingled with anticipation.

Without wasting another second, he opened his INVENTORY to see what treasures awaited him...

<Sticky Boots>

Type: Equipment

Rarity: Epic

Description: boots that can cling to any surface (Squishy, squeaky and super effective.)

<Essence of Purity>

Type: Artifact

Rarity: Legendary

Description: a crystal that purifies anything it touches (But can’t purify the host’s corrupted mind)

Lucien stared at the first item and let out a dry cough.

"Cough, cough..."

Just picturing himself sticking to the ceiling like some overgrown gecko made him cringe.

"Yeah, no thanks."

He chuckled to himself. The boots looked practical... but to him? Ridiculous.

Then a thought sparked.

"Maybe I should give it to Sebastian..." His grin widened. "I can already see it. That guy, with Silent Step and these boots? Total ninja assassin. GAHAHA!"

The idea amused him but the more he thought about it, the more sense it made.

"Actually... it’s perfect for Sebas," he muttered, nodding. "He could sneak across ceilings, drop down unnoticed... Yeah. Definitely his style."

Then he turned his attention to the next item.

Essence of Purity...

Lucien’s gaze lingered on the artifact’s description.

Naturally, he ignored the snide remark in parentheses.

"Hmph. I’m above petty system commentary," he scoffed to himself.

But when he reread the main description, his eyes lit up.

"If this is accurate... curses won’t affect me anymore? GAHAHAHA!"

His laughter thundered through the room.

Then he clicked his tongue.

"Too bad it can’t purify corrupted minds. Tch tch tch... I was planning to chuck it at that Coalheart bastard and see if it could turn him into a halfway decent human."

He sighed theatrically.

"What a waste of good potential."

He joked but his grin didn’t fade. Not even close.

Now, all he could think about was testing it. Seeing what it could purify and where its limits lay.

The possibilities danced in his head.

But then, something else caught his attention.

His gaze shifted to the golden card lying on the ground.

His heart skipped a beat.

"Is that... a 5-star skill card?" he whispered.

He carefully picked it up with both hands. He was eager to see the front.

And then... he froze.

It wasn’t a skill card.

It wasn’t even magic.

It was... something else entirely.

"What is this?" His brows furrowed in confusion.

Then...

[Ting!]

[CONDITIONS MET]

[...]

[MONSTERDEX is now unlocked.]

[Monster Cards are stored in the MONSTERDEX.]

Before he could react, the golden card vanished. It dissolved into shimmering light that drifted into the air.

[Launching system interface...]

< STATUS >

< INVENTORY >

< SKILLPEDIA >

< MAGIC BOOK >

< MONSTERDEX > (NEW!)

< ??? > (Conditions not met)

Lucien’s jaw dropped.

"MONSTERDEX."

He immediately summoned his newly unlocked cheat.

What appeared before him was... another book.

But not just any book.

Its cover was bound in black leather. It was etched with elegant dragon engravings that shimmered faintly in the light.

It looked cool.

Stylish.

Almost like it was custom-made just for him.

"Damn, this is right up my alley."

The moment his fingers touched the book, he felt an instant connection.

He fell in love with it right then and there.

Just looking at it made him feel strangely comforted. It’s like the weight of the world had eased, if only a little.

He then opened it.

The first page revealed a breathtaking illustration. It was a landscape that felt almost alive.

A wild forest bathed in glowing mist.

A crystal lake.

Creatures hidden in the shadows.

It felt magical... real.

He flipped to the next page...

...and blinked in disbelief.

"Oh crap," he muttered. "...Isn’t this just like a freaking Pokédex?"

The realization hit him like a slap.

Page after page listed monsters he’d already encountered.

Soilwyrms.

Red Slimes.

Orange Slimes.

...

Rainbow Slime.

Each entry came with detailed information.

Habitats. Traits. Behaviours. Likes. Weaknesses.

It was all there... cleanly cataloged like a tamer’s dream journal.

Lucien leaned in.

"This thing... it knows everything I’ve fought so far."

And somehow, he knew... it was just getting started.

Lucien stared at the book. Then... A sudden realization creeped into his mind.

"Wait a second... does this mean I’m actually a Tamer?"

The idea struck him harder than he expected.

He started piecing things together.

The SKILLPEDIA and MAGIC BOOK. The system said that they were inherited.

But from who?

Only two people came to mind... His father and mother.

Yet... they were just ordinary folks.

Kind.

Simple.

No signs of power, much less anything remotely magical.

"Could they have been hiding something?" he wondered.

Suddenly, a wild thought surfaced in his mind but he shook his head immediately.

"No. That’s... that’s not possible."

If his wild hunch was right, then the MONSTERDEX wasn’t initially part of the system. It was something that truly belonged to him.

...Something tied to who he was.

Even without the system...

He let out a quiet sigh.

His eyes drifting toward the still-locked system tab.

"The locked tab and maybe the system itself is part of some reincarnation package or privilege."

He paused. He realized something.

"Damn... that’s a lot of cheat for one guy."

The more he thought about it, the more tangled everything became.

Lucien sighed and shook his head.

"No use thinking about it."

With a breath, he flipped to the next page... It’s the one that held the monster card he just acquired.

Lucien’s eyes gleamed as he read through the entry.

"Just like the Boss I fought earlier..." he muttered.

Without hesitation, he reached out and touched the embedded card.

"Hmm. How do I use this?"

Just then, he heard the system in his mind.

[The word "Summon" can be used to call forth "pets" stored in the MONSTERDEX.]

Lucien’s heart thumped in anticipation.

No hesitation.

"SUMMON!"

The card began to glow in his hand, pulsing with soft golden light before lifting into the air.

It hovered for a heartbeat then shot downward, slamming into the ground with a flash.

Light burst forth.

And when it faded...

A small creature stood where the card had landed.

It bounced in place.

Round.

Jiggly.

Sparkling with rainbow sheen.

Pwee! Pwee!

It made a cheerful sound, almost like it was greeting him.

Lucien blinked... then grinned.

"Well... aren’t you adorable."
