Chapter 25 - Carrots and Radishes

Chapter 25: Chapter 25 - Carrots and Radishes

The unexpected harvest still sent a thrill through everyone’s hearts.

The crops weren’t just plentiful. They were enormous!

As per tradition, 10% would go to taxes and 30% to the lord. The remaining 60% belonged to the subjects.

Normally, that share would be enough to last a month. But with fewer villagers now, it would stretch much longer. And with the abundance of this yield, they were certain it could sustain them for over three months.

Even better, their surplus crops could be exchanged for coins. It’s useful for when Kael next visited. Some were already planning what they’d buy. Others were preparing to barter with fellow villagers.

But the true miracle? These crops had grown in under a week, all thanks to their Lord’s blessing. If they could harvest like this every week...

They exchanged hopeful glances. Shy smiles appeared on their faces. None of them dared say it out loud but the thought was there... Things really were changing for the better.

They couldn’t help but feel thankful once again that they had remained loyal.

What truly had them buzzing with excitement now was the idea of shopping from Kael’s next batch of goods. They were already hatching plans to surprise him when he arrived.

With the excitement slowly settling, everyone returned to work.

The newly harvested crops were carefully transported to the Anti-Decay Warehouse. Fortunately, it was spacious... One of the few good things left behind by the former baron.

’Father indeed had great foresight.’ Lucien thought.

Sebas had taken over the role of recorder, documenting everything that came in and what came out. The previous person responsible had long since left and with the village still short-handed, Sebas had no choice but to step up.

Lucien had already assured him that things would change soon. This was only temporary.

"It’s time to reorganize," Lucien had said. "We won’t stay like a nameless village for long. We’re going to become something greater."

Sebas believed in that vision... and in Lucien. He agreed wholeheartedly.

Meanwhile, Clara was busy mingling with the villagers. From a distance, it even looked like she was preaching again. If Lucien were nearby, he’d probably scold her on the spot for turning every interaction into a sermon. And it seems that she was...

Anyways... Lucien’s mind was elsewhere.

He was more excited about one thing in particular... The drops!

Before heading off, he turned back to address the crowd.

"Everyone," he announced, "this is an unprecedented harvest. Each of you contributed, and you all deserve credit. So tonight... We celebrate! There’ll be a feast to honor your hard work. I’ll also be making some important announcements, so don’t miss it!"

A wave of cheers followed, echoing across the territory.

Clara’s voice was the loudest, cheering wildly as if the feast was the grandest event of the year.

Laughter broke out.

Lucien just cleared his throat awkwardly and gave a small cough, trying... and failing... not to smile.

Lucien returned to the manor with a spring in his step.

He was excited... Genuinely excited!

The moment he stepped inside, he headed straight for the study, eager to inspect the loot from the miraculous harvest.

As he laid eyes on the items, his expression shifted into one of satisfaction. His eyes gleamed faintly with anticipation as he scanned the new drops.

Here’s what he’d received:

• Bitter Cores ×4 – Can be used in potion-making or antidote crafting.

Lucien’s eyes narrowed with interest.

"Not bad." His mind was already racing with possibilities.

This batch of healthy drops was different. All of them have great benefits.

Restoration.

Resistance.

Concentration.

And if his instincts were right, they might even help increase his divine energy over time.

There were alchemy ingredients and talisman materials too but he set those aside for now. He didn’t have the skills or the time to use them just yet.

What truly caught his attention were the seeds.

The descriptions hinted at special effects of harvested crops. That alone was enough to spark Lucien’s curiosity. He couldn’t ignore the possibility... that what if these were no ordinary crops?

Without wasting another second, he made his way to the garden.

He picked a vacant plot.

It was time to see what these seeds were really capable of.

And then...

Lucien retrieved a Soil Crystal from his INVENTORY. He crushed it into fine dust and gently scattered it over the freshly planted seeds.

Immediately, the miracle began.

The soil shimmered faintly as the seeds responded. Tiny sprouts broke through the dirt.

It stretched toward the sunlight.

Leaves unfurled.

The stems thickened.

The growth was rapid and unnatural.

But then, Lucien noticed something strange.

The carrot seeds began to emit heat. The ground around them grew warmer and a flicker of red glowed beneath the soil.

A glimpse of the root revealed a vibrant fiery red... not the usual orange. Even the leaves had changed, curling upward like tongues of flame. They didn’t look like vegetables. They looked like they were burning!

Then came the radish and with it was a chilling contrast.

Instead of warmth, the air around it grew colder. A mist began to form and frost traced along the edges of the leaves. The veins glistened with a crystalline pattern that looked eerily like snowflakes.

But just as he was marveling at the phenomenon, the radish’s growth suddenly stopped.

Its leaves drooped.

Then they began to wilt.

"Crap! What’s happening?" he muttered with his eyes wide with panicked.

Without wasting a moment, he rushed to get another Soil Crystal, crushed it and applied it directly to the radish.

"Is it the weather? Too bad we only have two seasons around here. Sunny or Rainy," he muttered under his breath. "Is that not enough for this thing?"

The soil responded briefly and the plant perked up slightly.

But then... the wilting returned.

Lucien frowned, then gritted his teeth. "Fine," he said, "you want more? Take it."

He used another Soil Crystal.

Then another.

Only after the third dose did the radish finally stabilize. The leaves no longer sagged. The frost returned to their surface and the cold aura settled once more.

Lucien let out a breath he didn’t realize he was holding.

But Lucien still wasn’t satisfied.

Something about the radish’s reaction unsettled him. It was too unstable and too unpredictable.

He fetched more Soil Crystals but this time, he didn’t crush them.

Instead, he carefully planted them whole. One beside each of the five radish crops.

"Better be safe than sorry," he muttered.

The crystals pulsed faintly as they sank into the soil. They anchored themselves like protective wards.

Lucien activated INSPECT, directing it toward the glowing crops before him

<Solar Carrots>

Not ready for harvest

<Winter Radish>

Not ready for harvest

"Wow... what are these things?" His eyes are wide in awe.

INSPECT didn’t just show basic descriptions... It let him see something more. A faint aura surrounded each plant, like a thin mist dancing along the surface. Energy flowed through them.

Calm yet powerful.

Was it mana? Or divine energy?

Lucien couldn’t tell.

Unlike Clara, he couldn’t perceive its colors or fine details. He could only see movement and presence, like currents in the air.

When he first acquired the INSPECT skill, he had assumed the flowing light was mana. He had labeled it as such without really knowing the difference.

But now...

According to Clara, the crops they harvested earlier didn’t contain divine energy. They had simply grown large and healthy because of the soil enriched with divine energy.

Lucien can agree with Clara’s earlier assessment. When he had used INSPECT on the previous crops, he hadn’t sensed anything unusual.

No aura.

No energy flow.

They looked and felt just like ordinary vegetables.

The only difference was their size.

But these new crops?

They were different.

They came from special seeds. They exuded an energy all their own.

Lucien’s eyes narrowed. "Maybe... these ones do hold divine energy."

A part of him stirred with anticipation. ’Could this be it? Could this finally lead to magic?’

It was a wishful thought but he couldn’t help it. The idea alone made his heart race.

He smiled faintly, turned away from the garden and headed back toward the manor.

There were other things to prepare.

He found Sinep, their chef, in the kitchen and quickly gave instructions.

"I want something special tonight. Use whatever we have left in storage and some from today’s harvest."

Sinep nodded enthusiastically. He was already running through recipes in his head. He had a cooking skill, after all. Lucien trusted him completely.

"There’s plenty to work with," Lucien added. "I’ll leave the details to you."

With the feast in good hands, Lucien stepped out.

He rolled his shoulders and let out a content breath. "Tonight was going to be something different."

Lucien kept himself busy for a while, heading out to farm more Honey Drops.

The nearby bees had always been a reliable source but after hunting down over a thousand of them, he came to an annoying realization.

They didn’t drop Epic rarity loot.

No matter how many he killed, the highest he ever got was Rare.

"Tch. So weaker creatures have a loot ceiling huh?" he muttered.

He then sighed in clear disappointment.

After a simple lunch, Lucien found himself at a rare moment of stillness. For once, he had nothing urgent to do.

The feast was still hours away.

He stretched his arms and cracked his knuckles.

"Well... I’ve got time."

His eyes narrowed slightly and a smirk formed on his lips.

"Why don’t I kill the Slime Boss in the meantime?"
