Isn't 2nd supposed to be something that comes after 1st.
And I know that the author said that u can read these as a standalone book but I reada comment which said that there are many things you won't understand as it is made on the assumption that you've read Lotm 1.
And really, just read this then watch anime, the experience of reading the novel is different and many details are often gets left out in the anime which is very interesting to read.
