I can't say anything about location but for the knife one of the details used in this chapter was that as he went back further and further the nicks disappeared from it and it appeared more useful or lustrous whichever you want as he said back then he was poor so he could have kept the nice for sentimental value of it maybe being his first weapon or purely for convenience since he was poor and it was clearly able to last since he kept it for at least 11 years.
